Member Focus: Brinn McGhee & Alejandro Garcia

Brinn & Alejandro, tell us a little bit about yourselves.
Brinn: I grew up moving around in a military family and ended up staying in Charlottesville for middle school and high school. Afterwards I studied Education at JMU and taught ESL for 2 years in Harrisonburg, VA and then moved to Ecuador in 2018 where I taught English for 3 years. I met Alejo my first week there! We moved back to Charlottesville in 2021.
Alejandro: I grew up in Quito, Ecuador and did my senior year of high school in Denver, Colorado. When I saw one particular building in downtown Denver, the Denver Art Museum, I decided I wanted to pursue architecture. I studied at Universidad de las Americas and have been practicing architecture ever since.
What are you working on currently?
Brinn: I teach Spanish full time for Albemarle County Public Schools and am also a licensed laser hair removal technician at Smooth Skin Laser part time. My mom owns SSL and I had always been interested in helping people permanently remove their unwanted hair.
Alejandro: I am an architect for BRW architects. When Brinn and I came to Charlottesville for our wedding, this firm was actively hiring and it’s been a great fit.
What excites you about it?
Brinn: Teaching at a high school has been incredibly fun and challenging. I’ve enjoyed being back in person after remote learning and my co-workers are some of my favorite people ever. Plus, lasering has been the most fun and rewarding part-time job.
Alejandro: Learning the building and construction norms and regulations within the U.S. has been a good learning process for me, however, I still think the metric system is better. I’m thankful for the friends I’ve made at work after making a big move to live in the States.
How did you find Common House?
Brinn: My parents were early members and told us that CH had availability for a small summer wedding so we decided to get married on the CH rooftop. It was the best! My friend from high school, Lauren, is the house programming manager so we both became members when we relocated to c’ville.
We love the socializing opportunities and the events. It was, and is, a great way to meet people, especially when you first move. There’s always an amazing party on the schedule and the beautiful ambience doesn't hurt.

Brinn: Crecí en el seno de una familia militar, mudándome cada cierto tiempo. Al final nos terminamos quedando en Charlottesville. aquí hice mi primaria, secundaria y la educación superior la terminé estudiando en la Universidad James Madison (JMU). Enseñé ESL por 2 años en Harrisonburg, VA. Luego decidí mudarme a Ecuador en el 2018 en donde también daba clases durante los 3 siguientes años. En mi primera semana en Ecuador conocí a Alejandro y luego de unos cuantos años más decidí regresar a Charlottesville en el 2021.
Alejandro: Crecí en Quito, Ecuador, hice mi último año de la secundaria en Denver, Colorado. Ahí cuando estaba caminando por el downtown un edificio de aspecto muy particular, algo que jamás había visto. En ese momento decidí estudiar arquitectura. Mi universidad la hice en Ecuador y desde el 2 año de carrera llevo practicando mi profesión.
¿Qué te emociona de tu trabajo?
Brinn: Dar clases en una secundaria ha sido muy divertido y desafiante. Disfruto demasiado que ahora todo sea otra vez presencial, además, mi ambiente laboral y mis compañeros de trabajo hacen que todo sea mucho mejor.
Alejandro: Me ha resultado muy interesante y desafiante el sistema constructivo en USA. Ha sido definitivamente entretenido el cambiar de sistemas de medidas, pero sobre todo entender los estándares a los que se tiene que someter una edificación para su futura construcción.
¿Cómo se encontraron con Common House?
Brinn: Mis papás son miembros desde hace mucho tiempo atrás y antes de casarnos ellos nos recomendaron hacer un pequeño evento en Common House. Así que decidimos casarnos en el rooftop. Fue definitivamente una muy buena elección.
Es increíble la oportunidad de socializar que tuvimos y a eso se le suman los eventos que realizan. Es un muy buen lugar para conocer gente y crecer socialmente conociendo nuevas personas y contactos. Generalmente los eventos que realizan, ambiente, gente, comida, música, etc. es muy bueno y agradable. Un lugar definitivamente recomendado.

Sería genial poder seguir conociendo gente latina, crecer en comunidad. Acá no es necesario hablar español para ser bienvenido, ni tampoco ser latino. Acá estamos todos bienvenidos ya que podemos crecer hablando en inglés, español, spanglish y a veces algo básico de portugués, en fin, bienvenidos a un pedazo de su tierra.
