Member Focus: Sam Christian

This March, Common House Richmond is welcoming spring with a Flower-Pounded Greeting Card Workshop hosted by member and local visual & performing artist, Sam Christian. Sam is a visual and performing artist specializing in quilting, ceramics, printmaking and installation art. We met up with Sam to chat about art, community, and their journey to their current creative practice.

"I actually didn't know I'd be a visual artist at all until my last year of college! I was set to be on stage but in the middle of it all, I fell out of love. I sort of started picking up art practices and revisiting ones I had put down(quilting, drawing). This career is just as much a surprise to me as to anyone else!"

Sam's work has a lot to do with community and utility practice. "I ask people to dream of a world where community practice is the norm, not just the exception. Where you build power around collective action and you support one another. So, I'm excited when groups of folx are participating in those community get-togethers."

And for Sam, Common House is "a cool place that feels a little separate from the world. It's a little escape with chill folx...and I love a Rooftop."
